The Salem City Council has approved the use of $466,850 in the city’s motor fuel tax fund to help pay for a $1 -million road and sidewalk improvement project.   The other $493,291 will come from Rebuild Illinois Funds.

Salem City Manager Annette Sola says the work will include resurfacing North Jefferson from East Schwartz to East Senneff, North College from 160 feet north of West Main to West Boone, and West Boone from 200 feet east of North college to North Broadway.  A new sidewalk will be installed along the edge of Bryan Memorial Park from North Broadway to College Street.

Sola reports the state is expected to award bids on the project this fall with construction to begin in the spring.   She says some prep work could be completed before winter.

The council voted to approve an estimated $43,950 repair of the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s large sludge storage tank and an estimated $22,506 engine replacement on a 2017 Ford F-750 dump truck used at the landfill and public works department.

Public Works Director Travis Sanders reported the recently poured concrete on West Kell at the South Broadway intersection has passed testing and is expected to reopen by the end of the week.
