The Mayors of Centralia and Salem have their own Shrine game competition again this year ahead of the Shrine Football game on Friday night.
Centralia Mayor Bryan Kuder and Salem Mayor Nic Farley are in a battle to raise the most money for the Shriners. The mayor of the city that raises more money will be allowed to put a pie in the other mayor’s face. The winning mayor will also receive a shot at the other mayor in a dunking booth.
Kuder says donations on his behalf can be left in Centralia in donation buckets at Centralia City Hall, Centralia High School, Crooked Creek Winery Downtown, and Stonewater Restaurant.
Mayor Farley is encouraging donations in the buckets in Salem, located at Salem City Hall, Salem High School, Village Garden, and the ABC Pub.
Farley says he couldn’t pass up the chance to raise money for the Shriners, but is hoping for a better result for himself this year.
“Not a fun year. We got 2 pies in the face. One from Mayor Kuder and one from a student that they raffle off an opportunity to hit the mayor in the face. That was not a pleasant experience so hopefully this year with a lot of support from the community we will be repaying the favor to Mayor Kuder.”
Kuder says what’s important is raising money for a good cause.
“If you feel the need to give, the Shriners is a great organization for the Shriner’s children hospitals, so it’s a good cause,” Kuder said. “If there’s anything I can do to help, that’s why I entered into this.”
Donations can be left this week through Thursday.
The event has been organized by Raccoon Grade School teacher Kendra Herman. The competition comes to an end before the student body in a Friday afternoon assembly. Raccoon’s student body is split between those who will go to Salem and Centralia High School.
