A 48-year-old former Salem resident died Saturday morning in a single vehicle crash in the Town of Manlius, New York.

David Engel grew up in Salem and was a Selmaville Grade and Salem Community High School graduate.   He was a well-liked teacher at Fayetteville-Manlius High School in New York where he was a dedicated English and Theatre Teacher.

Town of Manlius Police say Engel’s car went off a roadway on August 24th, hitting multiple telephone poles and overturning.  He was taken to an area hospital where he later died.  An investigation into the crash is continuing.

His obituary noted he affected countless lives through his work, inspiring students with his creativity, compassion, and outrageous sense of humor that united everyone around him. His classroom and theater stage were places of exploration, where students were encouraged to express themselves and find their voices.

Calling hours will be from 3 PM to 7 PM on Friday, August 30 at St. Ann’s Church, 104 Academy St, Manlius.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 31 at St. Ann’s Church.
