Wildcats Get Program’s First Win Over Murphysboro in 7-0 Opener

By WJBD Staff Aug 27, 2024 | 8:08 AM

For the first time in the program’s 16 year history, the Salem Wildcats soccer team beat Murphysboro, this time by a final of 7-0 to open their season under new head coach Cory Purintun.

The Cats got on the board in the first couple minutes on a long throw in from the sideline from Eli Baker right into the box and Robbie Shober scored the first goal of the year on a brilliant header.  The Cats would get 3 goals and another assist from Eli Baker, their all time career goal scoring athlete, who is only a junior.  The Cats also got goals from Caleb Purintun, Austin Woolridge and Alex Spencer.

The back line defense for Salem was excellent in the shutout.  Goalie Cory Keele and the defensive line of senior captains Keaton Gullion and Oliver Morton along with the side backs of sophomores Avery Gullion and Payton Gullion didn’t allow much pressure.

The Wildcat soccer team will open up play this afternoon at the Greenville Tournament at 4:30 against Pinckneyville. They will continue action Thursday with a 4:30 match against Lebanon before finishing up on Saturday with a 9am start against the host Comets.
