Centralia City Council to be asked to approve new garbage collection contract with higher rates

The Centralia City Council Monday night will consider a new five-year contract agreement with CWI doing business as Republic Services.

Under the new contract, the price of garbage collection will increase to $16.85 a month for trash and $4.18 for yard waste effective October first.  The city’s current rates are $13.80 for trash and $3.70 for yard waste.  There will then be a three percent annual increase over each year of the five-year contract.

The contract will include the ability for all residents to request large item/bulk pickups twice per month at no additional cost.  The city previously charged $4.50 per resident for this service.

CWI was one of two bidders.  The other bidder, Sunrise Sanitation of Salem, had higher proposed rates.

The city will continue to provide leaf vacuuming/collection services and will retain the fees collected for this service at a rate of $3.64 a month.

The monthly rate for all collection services will be $24.67 beginning October 1st.  Residents along Raccoon Lake will pay only for garbage collection.

City Manager Kory Smith says the city could also consider taking over the yard waste services rather than having the contractor perform them.

The council will also be asked to purchase playground equipment for Fairview Park with OSLAD grant funding.  The project’s scope of work will be to build a multigenerational playground with an obstacle course, musical playground, and modernized playground equipment for age ranges from six months to over 13 years old.  Unsafe equipment will be removed and salvaged for another purpose if it is safe to do so.

The meeting begins at six on Monday night at Centralia City Hall.
