A Central City man escaped injury when a bag he had attached to his wheel chair caught fire.
Central City Police say they were unclear where Craig Heitkamp of Marvin Street was located, but later found him when spotting what turned out to be a rubbish fire near the Green Street Road and Brick Hill Road intersection.
Heitkamp confirmed he made the call. He said a passerby had poured water on the fire and put it out before helping Heitkamp to his destination.
Police say it appeared a bag Heitkamp had on the wheel chair was getting friction from contact with the rear wheel well and the tire eventually starting the fire.
There were signs of a minor fire on both as well as a part of the seat, but Heitkamp was not burned.
The Centralia Fire Protection District had also been called out when the fire was first reported and had also helped in the search for Heitkamp.
The call came into police at 2:44 Thursday afternoon.
