Jefferson Fire officials say they were able to save a rural Mt. Vernon home after an attached garage was destroyed by fire.

The fire was at the Todd Ellis home at 10,260 Richview Road just west of the I-57 underpass.   Fire officials say Ellis was asleep when he heard a loud pop or boom.   As he walked towards where the sound came from, Ellis saw smoke coming in through the garage door.    When firemen arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the fire was beginning to move into the attic.

Firemen got a quick stop, and kept the fire from spreading into the home.

Jefferson Fire received mutual aid from Mt. Vernon City Firemen, Woodlawn, Kell, and Bluford Firemen, with Waltonville and Wayne City standing by at the Jefferson Rural Fire Station in the event of another fire.  Litton and United Medical Response both spent time at the scene, but fortunately there were no injuries.

The fire call first came in at 8:43 Monday night.  Firemen had the fire under control in about an hour and a half and cleared the scene around 11 Monday evening.
