Salem Police have arrested a 65-year-old Mt. Vernon man on multiple charges after he allegedly refused to leave the Salem Aquatic Center on Wednesday.

Charles Huggins of Lamar Street was taken to the Marion County Jail for two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, two counts of threatening a public official, and single counts of disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and resisting arrest.

Police had initially been called to the center for a man reportedly drinking liquor inside the complex.  The original plan was just to escort Huggins out, but he refused to leave.  In the process of trying to get Huggins to leave he alleged spit on one officer and kicked another several times.  Police say Huggins’ then allegedly threatened both of the officer’s families.

Police were called to the Aquatic Center during general swim at 3:49 Wednesday afternoon.
