A 13-year-old rural Texico resident won the Junior Talent Competition and a Salem man took first place in the Open Division during Sunday night’s Marion County Fair Talent Show.
Briar Tate advances to the state junior competition with his drum play.
“Playing for a bout 6 years since I was 6 years old. I was a big fan of rock when I was a kid and a big fan of the genre. And then I saw it was really cool to play the drums so got on them one day and had fun. Ever since then I’ve just been playing and getting better and better.”
Tate is home schooled and plays with the Praise Band at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He’s looking forward to his return to the state competition in Springfield next January.
Andrew Trinkle, who won the open division, had not planned to sing alone.
“Daughters been in this competition a couple of times through the years. Unfortunately she got strep throat or she would of been in the senior division with me tonight on stage. My son wanted to do his poem this year and I thought I’ll just go ahead and do it. Instead of cancelling our open divisions, he wanted to be here and do it, I thought why not, just sing a song.”
Trinkle says he’s been involved in music most of his life playing in praise and other bands after being a trumpet player in high school.
Both received $100 checks from WJBD-WSIQ for their first-place finishes.
The senior competition had to be canceled due to the lone entry being ill.
