Mt. Vernon man dies from injuries sustained in Thursday night crash

A 21-year-old Mt. Vernon man has died from injuries sustained in a late Thursday night traffic crash on State Route 148 south of Mt. Vernon near Straw Road.

An obituary for William Penrod III of Logan Street indicates he passed away on Saturday at St. Louis University Hospital.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reports indicate Penrod was southbound on Route 148 when he ran off the pavement into the roadside ditch.

Jefferson Fire officials say Penrod was trapped in his vehicle and they had to pop open a back door to get him out.

Penrod was initially transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon and then airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment.

He was the only one in the vehicle.

A funeral visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at West Side Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at West Side Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made in William’s honor to the Penrod family in the care of William Penrod, Jr. The Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at hugheyfh.com.
