Marion County Highway Engineer Mike McCormick says a bridge on Meridian Road over Lost Creek a mile north of US 50 is showing signs of failing and will be shut down to all traffic beginning Tuesday morning.
McCormick says the closure follows an inspection that showed critical structural deterioration. He reports the timber piles under the bridge appear to be twisting and moving in different directions.
The closure will remain in place until IDOT can perform further testing and determine if the bridge can reopen. Unfortunately, McCormick says that doesn’t usually happen and the bridge will have to remain closed until it can be replaced. That is a several-year process.
Since Meridian Road is on the Marion/Clinton County line, both counties will be involved in the replacement effort.
