The City of Centralia has received an $883,702 Community Development Grant from the state of Illinois to help pay for some of the cost of the city’s new raw waterline to Carlyle Lake.
City Manager Kory Smith says all the needed funding is now in place for the project to move forward. The city earlier received a $500,000 federal grant through US Senator Dick Durbin, and a $200,000 Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant. The rest of the money has been allocated from the city’s remaining federal COVID relief funds.
Smith is hopeful the project can start this fall. The remaining hurdle is getting approval of a conservation plan for an endangered snake species that has been found in one area along the path of the waterline.
The construction of the new raw water line is linked to construction of the city’s new water treatment plant that could also see work begin as early as this fall.
