Marion County Jail Administrator Troy Reed has been named Jail Administrator of the Year by the Illinois County Risk Management Law Enforcement Practice.

Co-Director Josh Blackwell says they provide insurance to 61 of the 102 counties in Illinois and Reed was named the best.

“Troy has led an aggressive effort to reduce agency liability by updating policy, implementing online training, attending advanced in-person training, and seeking outside guidance from specialists in areas of complex liability.  On behalf of the ICRMT, we applaud you for your efforts and thank you for your continued dedication to your agency and the profession in which you serve.”

But Reed was quick to say this award was only possible because of the work of the entire correctional staff, Sheriff Kevin Cripps, and Lieutenant Anthony Decker.   Reed explains his role in trying to reduce insurance costs.

“If there are any incidents or anything in the jail that might go on that may probably cause any type of lawsuits or anything I will contact Josh Blackwell in the group and the lawyers to say we may have a possible lawsuit so we can prep and hopefully this doesn’t happen.”

Sheriff Cripps praised Reed’s efforts.

“I love him as a friend.  He’s a good co-worker and a good leader for those in the jail.  Does a fantastic job.  Our goal is to train our guys so we don’t have problems in the future.  If we can train everyone and get them up to par and so forth and work on policies keeping those up to date…that’s our goal to do that for the betterment of our community.”

Cripps also noted the correctional staff works out of the public’s view and their work often isn’t recognized like that of the deputies who are out on the road.

The award was presented to Reed during a ceremony at the Marion County Law Enforcement Center on Thursday.
