The Salem Emergency Management Agency reports a damage survey of the city found one home destroyed, four with major damage, and five others with minor damage in the aftermath of the severe storms that passed through the city early Sunday evening.   All of the homes were damaged by falling trees and tree limbs.

Coordinator Andrew Strong says the destroyed residence is a mobile home on Trenary Street which had a tree crash lengthwise into the north end of the home.  It came to rest on a bed.  He notes there were likely no injuries because the occupants had left the mobile home when hearing the tornado warning siren and realizing their home was not safe.  Strong says the siren they heard was most likely the one near the Tennis Courts in Bryan Memorial Park which was just recently repaired.

The four homes with major damage are all still habitable. They include two in the 200 and 300 blocks of Oak Tree Drive, one in the 200 block of  Edgewood, and the fourth in the 900 block of Illinois Street.   The home on Edgewood has severe damage to one end of the home, but the other side is still livable.

Homes in the 200 block of Edgewood, the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Spruce, the 700 block of Allmon, and the 1100 block of Hawthorn all received minor damage.

The City of Salem is asking those with trees and tree limbs that need to be removed to drag them to the curbside for public works crews to pick up.

For those who need assistance on their property in removing natural debris, volunteer organizations are available to assist.  An application for help is available from the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief on the city website under the Storm Damage Assessment section or printed out for pickup at Salem City Hall.

You may call Salem City Hall at (618) 548-2222 for assistance.

The City of Salem appreciates everyone’s cooperation and understanding as everyone works together on the storm cleanup.
