American Legion Post 446 hosted a Memorial Day service on Monday honoring local veterans and recognizing families of those killed in military service. Family members were invited to bring wreaths to lay in honor of their fallen loved ones.

The event, originally planned to be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia, was moved to the American Legion building due to heavy storms on Sunday evening. The event was supported by Mike and Judy Sutherland of the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home, who made space available at the event’s original venue.

The keynote address was given by Kaskaskia College Trustee and veteran Jim Beasley. Beasley talked about a variety of topics. He praised the patriotism of those in attendance and throughout the community of Centralia, he discussed the importance of diversity and recognizing women and Black Americans in the armed forces, and he called attention to not only remembering veterans who lost their lives overseas, but also those who suffered at home as a result of their experiences in war.

Beasley also said he was concerned about a lack of youth patriotism and connection to American history.

“Unfortunately, today, the young folks don’t know a thing about the Gettysburg Address. They don’t know where it was and why it was. They don’t know that it was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War… The only thing we’re lacking in patriotism is, other than the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts who are here, where are the young folks? I’ve got to tell you, they’re not in the history books.”

Opening remarks were given by commander Al Simmons. Chaplain Wayne Sensel led the opening prayer and benediction. The pledge of allegiance and presentation of the flag were done by Cub Scout Packs 260 and 446 and Scouts Troop 260. The National Anthem, “God Bless America,” and “The Lord’s Prayer” were sung by Morgan Isaiah. Colors were posted by the Honor Guard detail, a three-volley salute performed by the Honor Guard firing party, and “Taps” performed on trumpet by Don Beaty.
