The Salem City Council Monday night awarded bids for two street projects and the replacement of more natural gas lines.

Rooters American Maintenance was the lowest of four bids for resurfacing of Kell Street from Route 37 to College and North College from Boone to Broughton.  Their price is $371,300.  City Manager Annette Sola says the project includes a concrete connection on West Kell at Route 37.   The council awarded a $179,520 bid to USDI to replace more natural gas lines in the subdivision behind Salem Bowl.  Both projects are expected to start in the next few weeks.

The council added new low speed vehicles that can be licensed like regular cars to vehicles that cannot use US 50 or Illinois Route 37 in Salem.  Golf cars and ATVs are already banned from the two state highways.   Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl made the recommendation because of safety concerns with the difference of speed between the regular and slow speed vehicles.

Sola was given permission to open a contract with Constellation Energy who supplies electricity to city owned buildings.  She reported as soon as the contract went into effect, the city saw huge costs in its bills.   Sola only wants to pull out a few facilities from the contract and return to Ameren to see how the price of electricity is impacted.

Saved with Amazing Grace was given permission to one again sell concessions at men’s softball games in Bryan Memorial Park.  Most proceeds will go towards the community Thanksgiving dinner.

The council approved the Mayor’s appointment of reading teacher Erica Nix to the Bryan Bennett Library Board.

Jim Koehler was reappointed as Mayor Pro Tem.
