The Salem Airport Authority will hold the first ever ‘Ralph Mirka Day’ on Saturday.

Airport Authority Chair Josh Dice says it’s a chance for everyone to come out to see the airport and learn more about aviation.  He reports the authority also wanted to honor Mirka.

“For the last 10 years have given annually in the form of aviation scholarship for those pursuing higher education.  Those pursuing a career in either aeronautics, mechanics, engineering, anything that has to do with aviation.  He passed away about a year ago but his trust continues to give annually.  So we wanted to do something in memory of him.”

Dice says all 60 slots for taking a free airplane ride have been filled, but those in attendance at the event from 8:30 am to 5 pm on Saturday will be able to get a free ride if there is a no-show.

With the popularity, Dice anticipates they will be holding the special days twice a year, with the next one to be scheduled in September.

Dice notes for those who are interested in flying themselves, lessons are available at the airport in a plane the authority has purchased.

There will be a food truck and other fun activities at the airport as part of Ralph Mirka Day on Saturday.
