The Salem Wildcats competed at the Rantoul 2a Track Sectional yesterday. Senior Caleb Smith was the Sectional Champion in the shot and discus. In winning the discus, Smith and his younger sister Hannah became the first brother/sister Sectional Champion in the same year in SCHS history. Caleb won with a throw of 176-5.
Smith also had a monster throw in the shot of well over 62-feet that would of broke the school record held by Mike Minton, however it was deemed a foul. Smith still won the event with a throw of 58-1/4. Winning the event by a little under 6 feet.
Also advancing to state was freshman Madden Thompson with a jump of 6-.75 and finished tied for 3rd. Senior Connor Tennyson was 2nd in the triple jump by ¾ of an inch behind Ethan McBride of Charleston. Tennsyon jumped 43-5.75 to blow by his PR by 4 feet. Alex Spencer missed the standard in the 800 by just 0.04 but did set a new PR and freshman record with a time of 2:01.79. He also ran a PR in the 300 hurdles in 43.52.
