Kaskaskia College recognized hundreds of new graduates at the graduation ceremony on Friday. The gymnasium was filled to capacity with loved ones present to celebrate the milestone for the graduating students.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Trustees, chairman Bill Hawley wished graduates the best, reminding them of the high hopes KC has for their futures.

“We believe in you. We look forward to great things from you. After all, you are our hope for the future. I sincerely wish every one of you the happiness of a successful life, the respect of your fellow human beings, and the infinite love of your families.”

College President George Evans encouraged the graduating class in his speech, advising them to turn the intense feelings that come with graduation into motivation as they move forward into an uncertain future.

“I stand before you today not only as a speaker, but as a fellow traveler on the road of dreams. I understand the mix of emotions you’re all feeling. Excitement, anticipation—some of you, apprehension. Today, I urge you to embrace those feelings because they signify your growth and the beginning of something extraordinary. As you step into the world beyond our walls, I challenge you to serve. I challenge you to seek your dreams.”

Outgoing student trustee Madison Johnson gave a speech congratulating her fellow graduates and likening graduation to a sunset: an ending anticipating a new beginning.

“A sunset is beautiful, and it marks the end of the day, like our graduation ceremony marks the end of our time here at KC. Although it is the end, like the sun sets, the next day starts with a beautiful sunrise. Our time after this graduation ceremony is the sunrise. No matter how each of our lives go, they are a beautiful part of our story.”

A total of 260 students crossed the stage to receive their diploma or certificate.
