The US Postal Carriers union is continuing its yearly tradition on Saturday with the ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ campaign.

Carrier Izzy Fontenez is coordinating the Salem effort.  He’s asking everyone to set out items at their mailbox for pickup when the carriers deliver the mail on Saturday.  Fontenez says the drive comes at a time many families will need help with food as their children will be out of school for the summer.

“I like to tell everyone to keep in mind the kids.  I like to get kid-friendly stuff, spaghetti O’s, ravioli, macaroni and cheese, granola bars, cereal, that kind of stuff.  I keep the kids in mind because they are getting out of school soon and it gets tough on parents sometimes.  I know with my kids they don’t stop eating.”

Fontenez says the ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ program is across the entire country and all post offices in the area participate.   The food picked up in Salem will go to the Salem Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.  Fontenez says if you are missed you can drop the food off at the post office or call for pickup.

Other post offices will deliver the food collected to their local food pantries.
