Wabash Communications has started construction on a new $1.1-million office/warehouse facility on West Whitaker Street between South College and South Broadway.
Salem Plant Supervisor Curtis Gould says the facility will take the place of the current downtown office on East Main Street as well as replace rented warehouse space elsewhere. The building will total 11,808 square feet and is being built midway between the block-long parcel of property that was the former location of Brown Shoe Company before it burned down. Wabash had earlier purchased the land from the city as part of an agreement to build the new facility.
Groundwork is now underway. Gould is hopeful the building can be completed by December.
Wabash Communications currently has 12 employees based in Salem. That number is expected to stay the same.
The Salem office will serve the Marion, Jefferson, and Clinton County area while the main office in Clay County will serve the Clay and Wayne County areas.
