Donald Alfred Rogers of Mt. Vernon passed away at 7:08 a.m. on Thursday, April 17th in Mt Vernon, IL. Don was born on February 28th, 1941, and was 84 years old.
He was born to Alfred and Helen Rogers (Foley) in Mt. Vernon. Don attended Mt Vernon High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served four years before he was honorably discharged.
Don married Joyce June Howell on July 25th, 1959, in Mt Vernon when he was 18 and she was 16. They were proud of being married for 66 years before his passing.
Their marriage resulted in three sons, Scott, Brian, and Wes. Even though he deeply loved his sons, he considered his grandchildren and great-grandchildren his greatest joy. Kaitlyn Rogers, Chase Rogers, Trace Rogers, Haydan Fahrenholtz, Reid Fahrenholtz, Kristin Pool, and Brandon Tompkins, great grandkids Drake Rogers and Caden Pool.
Don was best known locally for owning and operating Southern Illinois Tire for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed serving as a driver for his friends in the Amish community.
Don particularly loved fishing, a passion that he passed down to his sons. He spent many days fishing with his sons and several grandchildren however, his greatest moments were those spent with his grandkids. In later years, he spent most of his time watching several television series with Joyce and driving the two of them to Sam’s Club and Ollies. He was also an avid St Louis Cardinals fan and watched them religiously.
Don is survived by his wife Joyce. Sons, Scott (Jenniffer), Brian (Kim), and Wes (friend Misty). Grandchildren Katie (Steven), Chase (Dezaraye), Trace, Haydan, Reid (Katie), Kristen (Thomas), and Brandon. Great-grandchildren, Drake and Caden. Sisters Barbara, Joycelyn, and Judy. Brother-in-laws Dwight Chambliss and Bill Newbury. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Proceeding Don in death were his parents, sister Margie, brother Bill Fullerton, mother-in-law Vivian Flota, brother-in-laws Richard Dolan, Darrell Passmore, and Jerry Reece, sister-in- law Peggy Chambliss.
A Visitation will be held Monday, April 21, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home. Mr. James McKinzie will officiate. Private Interment will take place at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Donald’s honor to the American Cancer Society for Prostate Cancer Research and the Jefferson County Animal Shelter and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O.
