A spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Transportation expects heavy traffic conditions Monday for those coming to the area to see the total eclipse.
Paul Wappel says if you are driving Monday the key is being prepared for delays.
“Have a full tank of gas you could be stuck in traffic. Have a charged cell phone and first aid kit with you. We are asking people to please be patient if you are driving during the eclipse. Make sure your car’s headlights are on. Don’t take photo, video or wear eclipse glasses while driving. If you are in a vehicle don’t stop along roads or bridges, don’t park on the side of the roads or entrance/exit ramps of the interstate to watch the eclipse.”
Wappel notes highway construction projects for this year have been delayed where ever possible until after the eclipse to help eliminate traffic congestion issues.
Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps is warning against trespassing on private property noting in Illinois signs as well as purple paint can be used to mark no trespassing.
