A large number of fire departments were called for what Salem Firemen feared was going to be a large downtown fire at Steve’s Antiues at Main and Washington Street.
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says they were able to quickly knock down the visible fire on the first floor of the back of the building. There was smoke damage throughout the large structure, but no other fire was found. The Illinois Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the cause on Monday.
All streets in the downtown area were blocked during the fire fighting effort as fire departments were staged. The roads were all reopened by early Monday morning.
