The Salem City Council Monday night will be asked to approve a zoning change and allow a variance for a business expansion.

The council will consider a setback variance to allow Harvey Evans, doing business as Produce Plus, to add onto the kitchen.  It will be allowed to come within eight feet of the back property line. The project also includes an update of the façade of the building.  The Zoning Board of Appeals has already approved the project.

The council will consider rezoning property at 201 West Lake Street from single family residential to highway business.  Interim City Manager Annette Sola says the building has been used for storage with living quarters for many years.  The new owners are looking to update the entire property and remodel the living quarters.  The business portion of the building will be used as office space and storage.  The Planning Commission has approved of the proposed change.

The City Council will continue to review the city budget for the fiscal year beginning May 1st as well as the health insurance premiums.  Sola says the city is looking at a four percent increase in premiums or $10,693 for the year.  That will keep coverage the same.  The aggregate claims liability will increase by 11.71-percent due to the high number of large claims.

The meeting begins at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
