Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon says ‘it’s very likely that a recount of all the ballots will take place soon’ following his loss in Tuesday’s election to Republican primary challenger Claude Howell, Jr.
Cannon, in a statement, is thanking everyone who supported him and went to the polls. He notes with a very close race to the end, with just a few votes between us, he has been exploring options for moving forward from here.
Cannon says he doesn’t know if a recount will change things significantly or at all, but in a close race like this, he feels he has a duty to ensure the true wishes of the voters carry us forward.
Cannon says he appreciates the support he has received through the years and we’ll just see what happens next.
At the end of the vote counting on election day, Cannon trailed Howell 2,249 votes to Cannon’s 2,109 votes. There are still 362 vote by mail applications that haven’t been returned, but Marion County Clerk Steve Fox says normally only 40 to 50 more will arrive with a postmark on or before election day. Since Cannon is within five percent of the number of votes received by Howell, Cannon can seek a recount.
