Four storage units at Red Roof Storage on South Broadway in Salem were damaged when hit by an SUV late Sunday night.

Salem Police say the driver, 49-year-old William McDaneld of Kinmundy Road of Salem, told them he had fallen asleep while traveling south on Broadway and leaving the road near Wells Street before hitting the front of the four units and becoming wedged inside of one of them.

Due to the structural damage to two of the units, Salem Fire was called to stand by while Landers Towing removed the SUV in case the units collapsed on the car.  Fortunately, that did not happen.

McDaneld complained of minor neck pain but declined hospital treatment after being checked by United Medical Response.

The crash occurred around ten on Sunday night.

The crash occurred as other storage units damaged or destroyed during the tornado on March 31st of last year are being repaired along with the Red Roof building utilized by several businesses.

Construction is underway on new storage units at Red Roof Storage following a tornado last March 31st.
