The Salem City Council Tuesday night approved three bids totaling around $50,000 to replace a section of a failed section of roof at city hall and replace portions of the interior that received water damage.

Interim Salem City Manager Annette Sola says Fyke Contracting has been awarded two bids for the inside work.

“Completely refurbishing the two bathrooms in the hallway.  There was mold found in the drywall so the ceiling and drywall will all be replaced, including painting.  The kitchen area is the same.  The roof was completely damaged and had to be removed, the cabinets were full of mold and had to be removed.  We will be removing the floor.  And the back hallway that goes behind the council chambers will have to be taken apart and re-assembled.”

Sola says McCoy Roofing will take off the old roof in the rear section of the building and replace it.

“We will be using a crane truck to lift the existing air units that are there.  They will lift them up, make all the necessary repairs including tuck-pointing.  And then a new feature will be put in place to set those air conditioning units back in place and a new roof.”

Water that was trapped on the roof around the HVAC is blamed for causing the collapse. Sola hopes work can be completed in about a month.

The city council permitted Emergency Management Agency Director Andrew Strong to install one HAAS Alert module in an EMA vehicle that will send a signal to update mapping systems in vehicles to notify drivers to be aware of emergency vehicles possibly diverting traffic ahead. He had requested the units for all three EMA vehicles but the council decided to start with one since Strong had received enough donations to cover the $500 a year cost for the next five years. The use of the modules could be expanded later to the other EMA vehicles as well as to some fire and police vehicles.

The council approved the purchase of two underground pumps at a cost of $18,675 which will replace non-operational pumps at the old city landfill. The new pumps from EPG Companies have the same connections as the old pumps which will avoid new piping and wiring.

The council gave the Salem High School Sports Booster Club permission to host a triathlon utilizing the Salem Aquatic Center and Bryan Memorial Park on Saturday, August 3rd. A 5K run could also be added. Proceeds will help the booster club support various school activities.
