The Marion County Board Tuesday night approved a contract with American Legal Publishing to codify county ordinances and some resolutions.

The chair of the Codification Subcommittee Brock Waggoner says the goal is to make county government more open to residents.

“Big thing is we will be able to have that constantly updated and in public view.  So if anyone has questions or comments they can go and find them.  If it’s 2:00 a.m. or middle of the day, they can find them and will relieve a lot of stress on the courthouse.”

Waggoner says the complete set of county ordinances and some resolutions will be available on line in a searchable format by topic or keyword. In addition to the $9,000 set up cost, the county will face a year expense to keep up the codification and to have it available on a website.

Waggoner expects it will take nine months to a year to get the current ordinances and some resolutions with long last impact codified.

Marion County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency Coordinator Sherri Barter gave an annual report. She said ESDA responded to 74 events or calls for assistance from the sheriff’s department. Barter says there were 21 instances they were called by the sheriff’s department to help with traffic control at a traffic crash or fire. ESDA members worked a total of 2,201 hours.

The board heard the population of the county jail is down to just 48 people, with 27 of those being federal inmates. One juvenile is also in custody at the Madison County Juvenile Detention Facility.
