The annual Wamac Easter egg hunt is less than two months away, and organizers are once again making plans for a major event. On Monday evening, the Wamac City Council approved the purchase of 15,000 eggs for the hunt, which will take place at 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday, March 31, at Wamac City Park.

Mayor Jackie “Butch” Mathus says organizers will be busy preparing the thousands of eggs, as well as refreshments and gifts to hand out to the kids who take part.

“We’re going to purchase 15,000 eggs and we’re going to get all the materials ready — the juices, the chips and the candy — for seven hundred gift bags. We’ll get out 350 gift bags for the boys, 350 for the girls. We’ll put some toys in them as well.”

Mathus is asking local citizens, businesses and civic organizations to consider donating bicycles or Easter baskets to the event. He says the Easter egg hunt is open to all kids, and brings in visitors from many communities in the region.

In other action on Monday, the council approved the appointment of Robert Stover to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Stover replaces Donna Dodson, who had resigned from the board.

The council also voted to accept a bid from Ignacio Martinez for the purchase of property at 345 and 349 Sanders Street at $750 apiece.
