Fire caused heavy damage to one of five apartments in a house at 501 North James on the northwest side of Centralia early Monday night.

Centralia City Firefighters say the fire began in the Cloyd Culver apartment where a cooking fire was able to spread to the kitchen and into the living room and part of the attic before it was brought under control.

Culver and the occupants of the other units in the single-story home with a basement were all out safely upon the fire department’s arrival.  There was smoke damage to the other four units.

Firemen reported no major problems in fighting the fire.

All available Centralia City Firemen were called in.   The Centralia Fire Protection District provided mutual aid assistance on the scene, while Sandoval Firemen stood by at the main Centralia fire station in the event of another fire.

The fire call first came in at 5:22 pm, with firemen on the scene for about two and a half hours.
