Illinois State Police say 14-year-old male shot and killed in rural St. Peter; suspect in custody

Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 has confirmed a 14-year-old male juvenile was shot and killed in St. Peter on Saturday evening.

The suspect later fled the scene and was later apprehended.  Initial reports indicate the person allegedly involved in the shooting was also a male juvenile.

The incident occurred in the 700 block of North 2200 Street in rural St. Peter at 8:13 pm.

Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris pronounced the victim dead at the scene.  An autopsy is planned for Monday in Springfield.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Vandalia, and St. Elmo Police along with the St. Peter Fire Department all initially responded.  The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department later turned the investigation over to State Police DCI.

State Police say the investigation is open and ongoing and no further information is currently being released.
