Mercedes Smith is a recently turned 16 year old student at Marion High School.  She is also a standout softball player who has been a member of the Fuzion Organization under coach Shawn Rasul for the past 4 years.  Last fall, Mercedes was injured in a game at West Frankfort.

According to Rasul, “during a Softball Tournament on September 17th 2023 in West Frankfort, IL Cede was running the bases and had an accidental collision with the 3rd baseman. Shortly after Cede started and continues to suffer from concussion symptoms.”

Those symptoms include memory loss, lack of balance and daily headaches which has caused her to miss school ever since she was injured.  She also recently turned 16 but still has not been cleared to get her driver’s license.

Rasul told WJBD Sports, “She is dedicated.  Still shows up to all of our games and practices.  She is always upbeat and positive and cheering on her team no matter the situation.  Always the loudest in the dugout and a big time leader for our team.”

Rasul has set up a GoFundMe to help the Smith family who not only are driving back and forth to St Louis for medical appointments twice a week, but also attempting to rebuild after a fire.

Rasul added, ‘the kid has never once shown any negativity and has always done her best.”

Let’s help as a community to lessen the burden on her family if you are able to donate.
