The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has a new deputy.

Sheriff Kevin Cripps has sworn in Issac Hayes of Salem as the department’s newest deputy. He’ll report to the police training academy in Belleville on January 8th.

Hayes will replace Deputy Sean O’Leary who has resigned to take a position outside of law enforcement.

Hayes is a 2019 graduate of Salem Community High School. He is coming to the department from the Centralia Correctional Center where he was a prison guard. Hayes earlier worked as a part time correctional officer at the Marion County Jail.

Cripps says the command staff liked his work ethic when he was at the jail previously and he was near the top of the merit list. Cripps says he encourages part time staff to do their best to get their feet in the door to a fulltime position.

Cripps says once Hayes has completed training, the department will be at its full complement of deputies.
