Two people were injured following a rear-end collision in the northbound lanes of I-57 at the 82-mile marker south of Mt. Vernon Wednesday morning.

Jefferson Fire reports a faster-moving vehicle struck another in the rear causing both vehicles to go out of control.  The SUV that reportedly struck the car in front of it ran off the northbound lanes through a fence before coming to a stop.  The driver, who was reported to be from the Marion-Carbondale area, was not hurt.

The vehicle that was struck spun out of control upon impact and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop.  Jefferson Fire extricated both the driver and passenger who were from out of state.   The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries while an Air Evac helicopter landed in a field near I-57 to take the passenger to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment.

The crash was reported at 7:44 on Wednesday morning.

State Police say further information is not yet available about the crash.
