The Salem City Council Monday night is expected to make a decision on who will be the city’s trash collector starting January 1st.
The city received five bids for the service, but decided at the last meeting to table a decision until references could be checked. The city later asked for citizen input. The apparent low bidder is Sunrise Sanitation based in Salem.
The council will be asked to approve its 2023 tax levy for the tax bills that will be issued next year. The proposed levy of 1.8-million would be just 2.4-percent higher than what was collected last year. When setting that amount earlier, Mayor Nic Farley said they wanted to limit the increase to the amount of new construction and not the total amount they could have levied. The council will also be asked to abate taxes on the 2021 series general obligation bonds that are being paid off by sales tax revenue.
The council will be asked to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the Salem Fire Protection District for an expenditure of funds from the TIF Two fund balance for assistance in the purchase of a replacement unit for the Aerial Fire Truck. The agreement is contingent on the city being able to secure an extension of the TIF 2 district for an additional 12 years.
The council will also consider a renewal of its insurance coverage through the Illinois Counties Risk Management Trust. City Manager Rex Barbee says the new premium is a ten-percent increase over the current year.
A closed session is on the agenda to discuss the potential sale of real estate.
The meeting begins at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
