A 57-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been sentenced to 44 years in prison in connection with a foiled escape attempt from a sally port of the Jefferson County Courthouse in October 2021.

Judge Thomas Tedeschi sentenced Frederick Goss to the 44-year sentence for aggravated discharge of a firearm.  He added a 14-year prison term for disarming a correctional institution employee and ten years for attempted escape, but those two sentences will run concurrently with the 44-year prison term.   A Jefferson County Court Jury had found Goff guilty of the charges in August.

The 44-year prison sentence will run consecutive to a 40-year prison term handed down to Goss in February on a prior armed robbery case.   Goss was on trial for the 2021-armed robbery of the Huck’s Station on the south side of Mt. Vernon when he attempted to escape.

Goss reportedly became disruptive during the sentencing hearing as sentencing alternatives were discussed.  He eventually asked to be removed from the courtroom and sentenced in abstentia.  Goss allegedly cursed at the court and court personnel while he was being read his appeal rights.  After being removed from the courtroom, the sentencing was completed without him.
