A porch on a Salem home was damaged in an early Friday morning fire.

Salem Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Bill Fulton says a Salem policeman on patrol first spotted the fire at the Barbara Rogers home in the 1100 block of Howard Street.

Fulton says it appears the fire started in leaves under the porch and eventually burned through a 2 by 2 foot section of the decking and spread to a rocking chair. It was quickly extinguished with only minor damage reported.

Fulton says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire call came in at 5:29 Friday morning. Firemen were on the scene for about a half-hour.
