The South Central School Board has decided to keep any tax levy increase under 4.99 percent avoiding a Truth in Taxation hearing.

Superintendent Kerry Herdes says because of the large increase in assessed valuation in the district they could have set their levy up to 16-percent more.   Board members quickly indicated they had no desire to do that.   The exact levy will be set at the December meeting.

Herdes reviewed the district’s audit for the fiscal year ending June 30th.   He reports the district once again earned financial recognition status from the State Board of Education earning a score of 3.9 on a 4.0 scale.  The audit showed the district finished the year $802,000 in the black and had an average expenditure of $13,200 per student.

Herdes says the district will have to start learning to live without federal COVID relief money as that money is drying up and has to be expended by next September.

Herdes reported work will begin shortly on reroofing the old north wing of the South Central Elementary building in Kinmundy.   The work will cost $172,000.

After a closed session, the board approved Danielle Chasteen and Mandy Ruhool as volunteer assistants for South Central Middle School Volleyball.   A leave of absence was approved for Ryan Kapler.
