SSM Health in Illinois has announced Salem Community High School graduate Dr. Jayanthi Suppiah has returned to the area to become Regional Chief Medical Officer and Medical Group President for the Southern Illinois Region. Dr. Suppiah is the daughter of long-time Salem physician Dr. P. Suppiah.

Dr. Suppiah comes to SSM Health from Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix where she served as Medical Director and Clinical Endocrinologist-Internal Medicine Physician for the past 18 years.

“I am just excited to be coming back to the community again after this many years.  I knew I would come back to this area eventually so this is a perfect opportunity for me to give back and improve our healthcare system.”

Dr. Suppiah explains her new role.

“I work with all the physicians.  I work with our med staff committee and all our nursing leaders.  Main goal is to make the facilities to be safe for the care being delivered.  Its about patient safety and quality of care, that is where the bulk of my work has been out west.”

Dr. Suppiah says the people and hospitality of the region drew her back to Southern Illinois. She fondly remembers many of her teachers and counselors at Salem Community High School where she was on the tennis team all four years of high school.

Dr. Suppiah earned her Medical Degree from Spartan Health Sciences University in St. Lucia, West Indies. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, MO, and a fellowship in Endocrinology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL. Dr. Suppiah also received her MA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, WI.
