Both the Salem Grade and High School Boards were told at its Monday night meetings that the districts are rated as ‘Commendable’ on this year’s school report cards.
Salem Grade School Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says both Hawthorn and Franklin Park are at the commendable level.
“Commendable as a scho9ol that has no underperforming student groups, a graduation rate greater than 67% and whose performance is not in the top 10 state wide. Both our school’s are commendable. Thanks to our staff, faculty and kiddo’s on doing such a great job.”
At Salem Community High School, Principal John Boles says both math and reading scores are up.
“Our English and Math Department’s did a tremendous job. I specifically want to thank Lisa Stephenson who retired last year. She took a great amount of pride in bolstering that English curriculum. The English and Math Departments are great people, great teachers and very pleased with our scores. But like I told the Board tonight, we never settle and want to continue to grow.”
Boles says the goal is to move more of the students currently in the lower categories up into the meet or exceeds categories on the state testing. He reports their graduation rate is currently at 87-percent and 92-percent of freshmen are currently on track to graduate. The board was told the freshman score is key to the future graduation rate. Boles says there are some frustrating factors that keep the district’s rating from being even higher.
