The City of Salem is seeking public comment on its garbage collection service before making a decision on awarding a contract for service beginning January 1st.
The apparent low bidder is Sunrise Sanitation of Salem, the incumbent trash collection service DBS of Farina, AAA Disposal based in Odin, Dody Sanitation, and Republic Services which would service Salem out of Mt. Vernon.
Among the options being considered is the continuation of the fall city-wide clean up and/or a program where residents could pick up large items at any time at a nominal additional fee. The city has required each of the contractors to provide a bid that would issue a garbage ‘tote’ container to each residential customer for placement of their trash. The move will eliminate customers providing their own trash cans or placing bags of trash outside for pickup.
If you have concerns or any input, you are asked to contact the Public Works Department at city hall (618) 548-2222, the mayor, or any city council person.
The city council is expected to make a decision at its meeting next Monday, November 20th.
