Dr. Prince B. Oliver, Jr., 86, of Mount Vernon, IL, was born on November 1, 1937, in Dixie County, FL, to Prince and Constance (Taylor) Oliver. He passed away at home on Sunday, October 27, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Samuel Oliver, Sr. Prince married Gloria (Roberts) Oliver on March 4, 1973, in Durham, NC, and they made their home in Mount Vernon that same year.
Prince earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL, in 1958; attended Fisk University in Nashville, TN, for graduate studies from 1958-1960; completed his Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, in 1964; and completed his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, from 1964-1965. Prince served in the United States Army as a captain from 1965 – 1966. After serving in the army for one year, he completed advanced training in anesthesia at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, in Bronx, NY, from 1967-1970. While enrolled, he earned the titles of Assistant Resident in Anesthesiology, Resident-Anesthesiology and Senior Resident-Anesthesiology. Prince began his career at Good Samaritan Hospital in March of 1973 as Head of Anesthesia. He retired from SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in 2016 after 43 years of service. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiologists and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Prince was a loving, patient, caring and genuine individual who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Newell Funeral Home at 601 South 42nd Street, in Mount Vernon, IL, from 5-7 p.m. The memorial service will follow from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Prince’s honor to The Prince B. and Constance T. Oliver Scholarship Fund through Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, FL, and will be accepted at the funeral home. Prince is survived by his wife, Gloria Oliver of Mount Vernon, IL; daughters, Amy Oliver Gilyard (Wykeum) of Jersey City, NJ and Andrea Melissa Johnson (Kevin) of Virginia Beach, VA; five grandchildren: Layla, Kyndall, Simone, Sydney and Jackson; two sisters, Cynthia Carter (James) of Huntsville, AL, and Carmen Williamson (Percy) of Daytona Beach, FL; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
