A 72-year-old rural Texico man has died as a result of a Wednesday morning traffic crash on Tolle Road just northwest of the Mt. Vernon City Limits.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies say Paul Johnson was discovered by a passerby still inside his vehicle that apparently had overturned and landed back on its wheels earlier. Johnson was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and then airlifted to a St. Louis Hospital where he later died.
Accident reports indicate Johnson had crossed the centerline, lost control, struck the ditch on the Westside of the road, and then rolled over at least once before landing on its wheels. The vehicle sustained significant damage and had all the windows broken out.
Jefferson Fire and Salem Fire both assisted at the scene. Salem had stopped on their way to cover the Jefferson Fire Station while a fire was being fought at a home east of Waltonville that claimed two lives.
