Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies say a 54-year-old homeless Salem man stayed within the speed limit and obeyed traffic devices but refused to stop for them during a lengthy early Friday morning pursuit.
An attempt was first made to stop Allen Phillips on Selmaville Road. He continued to Red Stripe Road, Hotze, Cross, College Street, Spillway Road, and eventually northbound on Route 37 to Maplewood Avenue before stopping.
He was ticketed for fleeing and eluding police. After being booked into the Marion County Jail, he was given a notice to appear in court.
Phillips told deputies he didn’t stop right away because he wanted to smoke a cigarette before going to jail.
