The Salem Fire Protection District was called to a building at Citation Oil used to process sulfur dust produced in the processing of oil from the oil fields.
Assistant Chief Bill Fulton says the dust caught fire when an overhead door opened too far and broke a light fixture causing sparks to fall on the second floor that was covered with the sulfur dust causing it to catch on fire.
Firemen used foam to extinguish the fire. Damage was limited to a portion of the overhead door.
The fire call came in at 11:45 Monday morning.
Salem Firemen were later called to a grass fire along I-57 at the 111-mile marker around five miles south of the Salem exit. Fulton says it apparently started by a pickup truck being pulled that had a tire blow out. Either the rim or part of the axle that was dragging on the roadway is believed to have caused sparks that started the small fire that was quickly put out. The fire call came in at 4:30 p.m.
