The country and rock worlds came together Sunday night in Nashville as Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Bob Seger made a surprise appearance to help induct Patty Loveless into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Patty was visibly shocked as the “Old Time Rock & Roll” legend stepped onstage to perform her hit “She Drew a Broken Heart” in her honor. He’s such a fan, he’d previously traveled to her home in Georgia to add her background vocals to his project.
“I’m a little p***ed off. I just found out I have to follow Bob Seger,” Vince Gill quipped before singing a bit of Seger’s signature song. Vince went on to do Patty’s “Lonely Too Long” before officially welcoming her into the Hall of Fame, calling her both the “little sister I always wanted to sing with” and “perhaps the most authentic voice I’ve ever heard.”
Wynonna Judd kicked off Tanya Tucker‘s induction with a soulful rendition of “Delta Dawn,” Tucker’s breakthrough hit when she was only a teen. Jessi Colter and Margo Price followed with “It’s a Little Too Late.” Tanya’s frequent collaborator Brandi Carlile wrapped up the tributes with her take on “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane.”
Brenda Lee and Connie Smith teamed up to officially induct Tanya into the Hall’s ranks.
Songwriter Bob McDill, known for writing hits for Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and more, was the third of the night’s honorees.
