Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has released the name of a man killed in a police officer-involved shooting in Centralia late Tuesday morning.

The man is identified as 30-year-old Todd Pearce of Centralia.  Cannon says an autopsy will be completed on Wednesday at the Champaign County Coroner’s office.

State Police DCI Zone 8 agents say preliminary information indicates a Centralia Police Officer responded to a home in the 500 block of Meadowbrook Lane for a welfare check.

Following consent to search the residence, officers located the man in the basement. He was reportedly armed with a knife and attacked the officers. An officer discharged his weapon striking the male, who succumbed to his injuries.

State Police say an officer sustained a knife wound in the shoulder and received medical treatment.   Centralia Police say the officer was released following treatment.

Centralia Police say the male suspect was wanted in connection with violation of a court order.  Online Marion County Court records show Pearce had posted $1,000 cash bond on September 18th a week after being formally charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery.

Centralia Police, in an earlier news release, indicated less than lethal force options were initially utilized but were unsuccessful in stopping the attack.

After the shooting, Centralia Police say officers immediately began to provide treatment. EMS subsequently arrived and assumed life-saving measures as well, but they were unsuccessful.

Due to the incident being an officer-involved shooting, the investigation was immediately turned over to the Illinois State Police.

State Police say the investigation is active and ongoing, and no additional information will be released at this time.
