The Salem Community High School volleyball team hopes to raise more than $6,000 to assist Faith Evans with medical costs associated with her battle against breast cancer.

Assistant Coach Suzanne Brown says normally the annual Pink Out Game raises a few thousand dollars, but the effort has expanded beyond the game this year to help pay back Evans for everything she and her husband have given to the community.

Brown says the idea to help Evans came from player Sarah Lipe who works at Produce Plus about three weeks ago.

“We really just jumped on that.  They came up with some ideas.  Seniors made some baskets we are going to raffle off at the game.  Coach Helm came up with the idea of selling raffle tickets for a pink Yetti cooler and that went wild in town.  The Yetti cooler itself probably raised over $2000.  At the game, we will have a bake sale and have a chance for people to buy raffle tickets for the cooler.”

Brown gives all the credit to the volleyball team.

“Through different businesses in town, churches and individuals, they have made a lot of donations and people have rallied behind this. That speaks volume for a small town what it can do with young people leading the drive.  When we started our goal maybe was a couple thousand dollars but I really feel when we are done we will be over the $6000 mark for them.”

The volleyball team gave up part of their day off from school Monday to hold a car wash at UcamP Express RV Park. The team ended up washing over 50 vehicles including a large horse trailer. The car wash raised $1,340 in donations, including some $100 bills. A church also dropped off a $500 donations bringing the total of donations for the day to $1,840.

All the fund raising activity concludes with the Pink Out Volleyball Game Tuesday night at SCHS. The freshman game begins at 5:30 leading up to the varsity competition at seven Tuesday night. Everyone is invited out to help reach the lofty goal.
