Salem Police were called to a single vehicle crash downtown early Thursday morning a short time after a high speed pursuit had been suspended on West Main and the Selmaville Road.
Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies were trying to stop the car that had been taken from the victim of a domestic battery in Odin just a few minutes earlier.
The car was reportedly traveling at 120 miles per hour at the time the chase was suspended. When police arrived at the scene of the crash, no one was around. The vehicle had hit one power pole, pulling down the power lines and causing a pole across the street to break.
About eight minutes later, police received a 911 call from the suspect in the domestic battery, 26-year-old Taylor Schulz of Nashville, Tennessee, who claimed he was the victim of a carjacking and had been forced to drive the vehicle. He was on West Warmoth Street at the time of the call and was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment.
Salem Police say they plan to review video in the area that may show the crash to determine who was in the vehicle and who was driving.
Meanwhile, the sheriff’s department gave Schulz a notice to appear for domestic battery. The alleged victim of the battery at the apartments on Evergreen Street in Odin did not require hospital treatment.
The domestic battery report came in at 1:10 Thursday morning. The chase began at 1:58 am. The crash was called in at 2:16 am and the 911 call from Schulz was received at 2:24 am.
